5 Rug Mistakes That Are Making Your Space Appear Smaller

The right rug can elevate a room, but the wrong one can make your space feel cramped and smaller. Here are five common rug mistakes to avoid, with tips from Ruggable’s senior creative director Cassandra Leisz, to help you make your home feel more open and airy.
1. The Wrong Rug Size
Choosing a rug that’s too small can make a room feel smaller. “An appropriately sized rug grounds the room by sitting underneath all of the key pieces of furniture,” says Leisz.
Living room: Ensure the front legs of your furniture sit on the rug.
Dining room: Measure your table and add 4 feet on either side for the ideal rug size.
2. A Rug with Dark Colors or Busy Patterns
Dark or busy rugs can absorb light and visually close in a room. Lighter colors reflect light, making a space feel larger and airier. “Save darker or bold patterned rugs for larger rooms,” advises Leisz.
3. Incorrect Rug Placement
Even a perfectly sized rug can look off if placed incorrectly. “Placing a rug too far from furniture or too close to the edges can create imbalance,” says Leisz. Position the rug to enhance the room’s harmony.
4. A High Pile or Shag Rug
While shag or high-pile rugs add warmth and comfort, they can make a room feel smaller. “Smooth and low-pile rugs contribute to a more open feel,” Leisz explains, so opt for lower piles in smaller spaces.
5. A Rug That’s Too Small to Anchor Seating
For a cohesive look, choose a rug that frames your furniture. “A rug that’s too small will make the room feel disjointed,” Leisz says. Ensure the rug covers most of the seating area to create a more unified, spacious effect.
By avoiding these mistakes and selecting the right rug size, color, placement, texture, and functionality, you can make your space feel more expansive and stylish.
